In 1871, a Quaker agent erected a one-room building on Sugar Creek to house supplies. A school was organized and work continued through the fall and spring to get the school establish and operating. Riverside Indian School is the largest and oldest off-reservation BIA boarding school in the United States.

Students attend Riverside from all across the United States and come from more than 100 differenct Tribes. Riverside provides services for students in grades 4 through 12. There is also a self-paced, accelerated program ACE (Accelerated Curriculum Education) designed to meet the needs of students 18 or older, working to complete graduation requirements. Finally, career training is provided by the Caddo-Kiowa Technical Center in close cooperation with Riverside.
